Our mission is to promote and develop the application of creativity and the arts for health and quality of life outcomes for all people in Australia, regardless of age, race, gender or religious or political persuasion. In November of 2015, in celebration of Arts in Health Month, the Alliance for Arts & Health NJ hosted a series of open house tours at hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout New Jersey. One example is an article published in the book Creative Arts for Community and Cultural Change (McLean & Kelly, 2011) written by B. Stephen Carpenter II, professor of art education in the Penn State School of Visual Arts. We offer music at bedside, throughout units and in waiting areas of the hospital by professional musicians (Artist in Residence) and volunteer Duke student musicians. The journal defines ‘health’ broadly which includes physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, occupational, social and community health. Peers and MPs with a shared interest in the field of arts and health come together for regular events to hear about and discuss the latest developments relevant to current policy priorities. Freelance and self-employed artists can apply for small grants of £1,000 to £5,000 to spend time building these links to broaden their horizons and open their work to other perspectives. The programme is open to emerging and mid-career artists working in combined arts, literature, music, theatre, dance, visual arts and crafts and design. In term 1 students take Module 1- Critical Mental Health Sciences and Module 2- Performing Mental Health. London Arts in Health Forum is a membership organisation which aims to develop the role of culture in wellbeing and to promote and support arts in health activity across London and nationally. The Journal of Applied Arts & Health serves a wide community of artists, researchers, practitioners and policy-makers evidencing the effectiveness of the interdisciplinary use of arts in health and arts for health. Through another Arts in Healthcare program, Art for Caregivers , ACP works with caregivers, both professional and family, to teach them art techniques to enrich the communication skills and health of those for whom they are caring. Valerie Wright-St Clair (Head Occupational Therapist at Waikato Hospital) negotiated with the Waikato Hospital Health Board to make art and crafts available to the patients.arts and health

Since a 2002 World Health Organization publication by the name of The World Report on Violence and Health, 1 violence has been established as a worldwide public health problem rather than just a security and criminal justice issue. It can provide an introduction to the profession of creative arts therapy, which requires a graduate degree; the bachelor-level courses would not be acceptable toward a graduate-degree in creative arts therapy. Arts practitioners work with a wide spectrum of patients in almost every setting, including but not limited to, nonprofit and for-profit healthcare facilities, hospice programs, long-term care facilities, mental health programs, schools, rehabilitation treatment centers, special needs camps, disaster response teams, psychiatric forensic units, veterans’ facilities, prisons, community centers, wellness programs, and military bases.

In addition, Module 3 includes a work placement related to creative arts and mental health, which is facilitated by the tutors and lecturers in this programme through existing and new partnerships with the performing arts community, voluntary organisations and mental health organizations.

The practice of psychotherapy in New York is restricted to individuals who are licensed by the State Education Department and registered to practice creative arts therapy, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychoanalysis, medicine, licensed clinical social work, psychology or registered professional nursing.

The arts can have positive effects on quality of life and have been shown to foster mental, physical, and social benefits as well as result in fewer doctors’ visits, reduced use of medications, lessened anxiety and depression, improved memory and socialization skills, and increased levels of independence in a variety of populations and settings.arts and health
