The purpose of the Inquiry is to develop policy recommendations and inform a vision for political leadership in the field of arts, health and wellbeing. The breadth and diversity of the collection as well as the historical significance of many of the artefacts make the collection a unique resource to transform the healthcare environment for the benefit of patients, staff and visitors. Aesop and the Canterbury Christ Church University’s Faculty of Health and Wellbeing have identified continuing professional development as a key factor in the future of arts in health. We were one of the top five in the UK for medicine in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Our community base is located at the Ward Park Arts and Crafts Centre in Hamilton. You will develop new ways of looking at your own practice within the field of arts, health and wellbeing. The arts can make a powerful contribution to increasing the health and wellbeing of older people and those living with chronic conditions, through strengthening social networks and physical and creative activity. RSPH has made important contributions over a number of years in supporting the development of the arts and health field in the UK. Two articles, Creative New Directions in Dietetics by Catherine Morley and Mapping Resiliency Building Bridges Toward Change an Experiential Arts-based Narrative Inquiry with Dietetics Professionals by Jacqui Gingras, Assistant Professor at the School of Nutrition at Ryerson University, and Jennifer Atkins a dietitian at Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, presented varied arts based approaches in practice.arts and health

I presented a keynote for the Arts Based Research Network, Acadia, Creative Arts in Interdisciplinary Practice, A Pond of Interdisciplinary Opportunity, followed the next year by the course Problems in Education Research in Creativity (MEd Curriculum Studies) and a keynote for the Acadia School of Education Summer Institute, Navigating the Tides of Challenge and Change through the Creative Arts in Education and Research.

Making The Arts an important part of the way we deliver health services and public health messaging is something I have always been passionate about. David McDaid ( @dmcdaid ) is an Associate Professorial Research Fellow in Health Policy and Health Economics at the Personal Social Services Research Unit at LSE. The first short course, ‘The Art of Wellness: Visual Arts and Health’, is provided FREE whilst the other 7 are offered at an introductory price of $20 AUD each. In a different type of movement expression, tai chi, a semimeditative exercise derived from martial arts, has been gaining popularity as an intervention for reducing falls in older adults and improving health status.

Community Well-being Arts and health benefit communities by engaging people in programs aimed at prevention and wellness activities and sharing information to improve health literacy. The exhibit brings together startling and fresh works of art by professional artists, alongside that of participants from seven arts and health programs that engage the community in creative dialogue.

Clinical expressive arts therapy and non-clinical applications of the arts are used in educational, medical, and a wide variety of community programs. Personal expression through creativity and the arts has been proven to access the body, mind, spirit and heart continuum in the process of healing and recovery. One example is an article published in the book Creative Arts for Community and Cultural Change (McLean & Kelly, 2011) written by B. Stephen Carpenter II, professor of art education in the Penn State School of Visual Arts. Peers and MPs with a shared interest in the field of arts and health come together for regular events to hear about and discuss the latest developments relevant to current policy priorities. Freelance and self-employed artists can apply for small grants of £1,000 to £5,000 to spend time building these links to broaden their horizons and open their work to other perspectives.
