Arts and health embraces a range of arts practices occurring primarily in healthcare settings, which bring together the skills and priorities of both arts and health professionals. An increasing number of health practitioners are turning to the creative arts as a way of expressing and coming to terms with the sometimes harrowing task of helping people who are ill and suffering. The Ashley Family Foundation, which supports projects that protect rural communities and encourage participation in the arts, particularly textiles has extended the application deadline for its grants programme to 5.30 pm on the 18th November 2016. This report presents key findings on the associations between engagement in the arts, health and illness. In all 4 areas of creative artistic expression reviewed here, there are clear indications that artistic engagement has significantly positive effects on health. ACAH is also supporting new arts and health initiatives under development in the Asia Pacific. Arts programming for caregivers creates a more normative environment within which care can be provided.
During 2013, the Alliance participated in a major national consultation on a National Framework for Arts and Health which was endorsed by Australian Health and Arts Ministers. We also searched literature from 1970 to 1995 on PubMed (MeSH art therapy database) to determine whether there were further foundational research articles, but we did not find any abstracts matching our criteria. Foundations of Arts and Health will appeal to students wanting to understand more about the interconnectedness of the arts with human health.
