The Art of Science Learning’s four year research study found a strong causal relationship between arts-based learning and increased creative and critical thinking skills, collaborative behavior and enhanced STEM innovation outcomes. Funds are to be used to enhance PK-12 arts education through teaching artist programs, connections with community arts education, curriculum planning, professional learning for arts educators, teaching artists and teachers of all content. The work of the centre engages with aspects of aesthetics, creativity, ethics and advocacy, and celebrates, as well as questions, learner identities and learning communities. As we continue to refine and improve the quality and relevance of every students learning experience, we believe learning and teaching excellence should be recognised and rewarded. The district applied for a four-year grant called Supporting Arts Integrated Learning for Student Success (SAILSS) from the U.S. Department of Education and was one of 15 districts and schools to receive it.
With more than 15 years teaching in high schools, he joined Project Zero in 1986, working since then on projects in arts education, alternative assessment, project-based curriculum and school reform. He is currently the Fine Arts department chair and a teacher at Washington High School in Fremont, California, where his specialty is designing and delivering student-driven, arts-focused interdisciplinary curriculum and fostering cultures of critical thinking and reflection.
Our research shows that there are many adults less likely to participate in learning for a variety of reasons, and our work tackles inequalities and empowers individuals from under-represented groups to take control of their lives and realise their potential.
The Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning is a multidisciplinary urban arts center located in the diverse community of Southeast Queens. Larry ‘ Farrell is Professor Emeritus and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Arts and Learning, Faculty of Education, Queen’s University. Participants will explore how to create powerful learning experiences that use the arts to connect students with their own communities and other cultures. Schools with teams of teachers who are all using this approach have the strongest results, both in terms of student understanding and school-wide use of arts integration at appropriate times.
