The purpose of the Inquiry is to develop policy recommendations and inform a vision for political leadership in the field of arts, health and wellbeing. The breadth and diversity of the collection as well as the historical significance of many of the artefacts make the collection a unique resource to transform the healthcare environment for the benefit of patients, staff and visitors. Aesop and the Canterbury Christ Church University’s Faculty of Health and Wellbeing have identified continuing professional development as a key factor in the future of arts in health. We were one of the top five in the UK for medicine in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Our community base is located at the Ward Park Arts and Crafts Centre in Hamilton. You will develop new ways of looking at your own practice within the field of arts, health and wellbeing. The arts can make a powerful contribution to increasing the health and wellbeing of older people and those living with chronic conditions, through strengthening social networks and physical and creative activity. In this unit you will learn about the potential health benefits of visual arts, journaling, music and voice, dance and movement, drama and performance, story writing and poetry and therapeutic environments. This inter-disciplinary grouping will explore the relationship between the arts/design and public health at personal and societal levels. Arts based approaches to health promotion, social determinants of health and to a range of health issues (including mental health, dementia and aging, disability, childhood development and cancer) can have stunningly powerful effects. Most importantly, we connected with colleagues that share in our vision of all arts contributing to a healthier New Jersey! Libby Clements (Hamilton City Council Recreational Officer) was the brainchild of this scheme via Penny Eames (Arts Access Aotearoa) after a meeting with Peter Senior from Arts for Health, Manchester, England. West Midlands Arts And Health Wellbeing

Uplifting architecture, soothing and inspiring stories, song, poetry, ritual and visual images combined with hospitality, care and attention have been part of the historical foundations of healthcare across the world. This framework provides the necessary information and guidance to assist State and Territory governments to evaluate existing programs, consider new directions and identify new partners to support arts and health initiatives appropriate to each jurisdiction.

Last year, we helped create a mosaic mural with Healing Arts at Atlantic Health System’s Artist in Residence, Kathy Casper; met with the NJ artists that have artwork displayed in the University Medical Center of Princeton in Plainsboro and the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper in Camden; and toured all three facilities.

Two articles, Creative New Directions in Dietetics by Catherine Morley and Mapping Resiliency Building Bridges Toward Change an Experiential Arts-based Narrative Inquiry with Dietetics Professionals by Jacqui Gingras, Assistant Professor at the School of Nutrition at Ryerson University, and Jennifer Atkins a dietitian at Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services, presented varied arts based approaches in practice.arts and healtharts and health

Since a 2002 World Health Organization publication by the name of The World Report on Violence and Health, 1 violence has been established as a worldwide public health problem rather than just a security and criminal justice issue. Healing architecture, art installations, natural lighting, and access to healing gardens all help to decrease patient and caregiver stress, improve outcomes, enhance patient safety, improve way-finding, and increase overall quality of care. There was no upper limit of grant that can be applied for, however applicants are asked to take note of previous grants awarded for an indication of realistic award figures. This double-blind peer-reviewed journal provides artists, researchers, healthcare professionals, educators, therapists, programme administrators and funding bodies an opportunity to report and reflect upon innovative effective practices. For many health professionals, the arts are an invaluable creative outlet and reflective tool.
