The Arts and Health graduate certificate program provides arts professionals, health care workers, and administrators from related fields with the educational background and tools needed to integrate the arts in support of health and wellness among diverse individuals and communities. It encompasses a broad spectrum of creativity from participation and socially engaged practice to site-specific art works aimed at enhancing healthcare environments. Investigating the relationship between art and health offers some interesting ways to bridge these 2 important areas of inquiry and perhaps provide timely and important insights into each. Other students may go on to seek mental health qualifications, or may pursue postgraduate research/doctoral training in either art or mental health. For example, the ‘Dreams’ project at the Mater Hospital has shown that contact with the arts whilst in hospital can make people more relaxed, relieve stress and worries, and relieve pain and symptoms. Both are needed to understand creative engagement and health effects among generalized populations with unique individual differences.

Making the arts part of staff’s lives can assist in balancing the pressures of work with the benefits of creative and cultural activities. This pretest-posttest study included 4 individual therapy sessions conducted over a 4-week period, with each hour-long session comprising guided, semistructured, creative arts therapy exercises involving drawing implements. Over the next six months they will be offering opportunities for artists and health academics at King’s to work together and develop new conversations and collaborations. Four primary therapies emerged: music engagement, visual arts therapy, movement-based creative expression, and expressive writing. Our work will keep curiosity and the highest possible arts process’s at the heart of our thinking and action.
