The MAAE Arts Education Awards took place at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Resort and Hospitality Center in Biloxi on June 8 at 5 during the Mississippi Arts Commission’s Whole Schools Institute. These are just a few of the findings from a statewide arts education study launched during the 2010-2011 school year by Perpich Center for Arts Education, a state agency in Golden Valley serving all schools and students in Minnesota. These programs enhance and support sequential arts education taught by certified, qualified teachers in our public schools. In many districts, the arts have suffered so long that it will take years, and massive investment, to turn things around.
We have arts courses in 99 percent of our schools, but less than half of the high schools and middle schools and only 28 percent of elementary schools provide the state-required variety of arts areas. Research has also shown impressive benefits of arts education on entire school culture—especially student motivation, attitudes, and attendance. Successful applicants to Projects in Schools are listed on a roster for one year; teachers use the roster to connect with artists directly to plan the implementation of a hands-on arts education project. Minnesota schools are doing much better than schools in some other states when it comes to arts education. Engaging with regional, state-level, and national arts and education organizations to develop, align, and promote policies to support K-12 arts education. In 2001, the California Board of Education set standards at each grade level for what students should know and be able to do in music, visual arts, theater, and dance, but a statewide study in 2006, by SRI International , found that 89 percent of K-12 schools failed to offer a standards-based course of study in all four disciplines.
A follow-up analysis, released in February 2008, showed that 16 percent of districts had reduced elementary school class time for music and art – and had done so by an average of 35 percent, or fifty-seven minutes a week.
