The Department of Art History is dedicated to exploring and demonstrating the significance and meaning of art, visual experience, and their histories globally to the University and its communities through exemplary research and teaching. Art history at Tulane focuses largely on Europe and the Americas, the latter including the United States, the Caribbean, and Latin America. History is about the study and interpretation of past events and their significance for understanding ourselves and our contemporary world. Critical theory in art history is often borrowed from literary scholars , and it involves the application of a non-artistic analytical framework to the study of art objects.
