An unsuspecting turn for the history of art criticism came in 1914 when Sigmund Freud published a psychoanalytical interpretation of Michelangelo’s Moses titled Der Moses des Michelangelo as one of the first psychology based analyses on a work of art.
Through history we can understand our past, explain our present and be better equipped to predict the future. Students nominated to participate in the 1960’s Scholars Program invite outside speakers to campus, creating some of the most anticipated and exciting arts programming at the College from the ground up. Spencer Studio Art Building and at the annual Senior Studio Art Exhibition at the Williams College Museum of Art.
The methodical orientation of these modules allows the central perspectives of art history research to be developed: Image and space concepts, mediality as well as theories and contexts. Both the making of art, the academic history of art, and the history of art museums are closely intertwined with the rise of nationalism.

The History and Theory of Architecture program explores the history, meaning and social significance of the built environment, and how it both reflects and shapes human circumstances, needs and aspirations.
