Creative Learning through the Arts – an action plan for Wales sets out a range of new opportunities for children and young people across Wales. The carry-over of skills from learning and participating in music have shown benefits in language skills. As educators, we need tools to connect students’ passions, and our own, to meaningful learning for the 21st century. The school mentioned in this article is only one of dozens that have successfully initiated and applied the arts integration model.
Being a pianist since a very young age, and being a piano and dance teacher for many years, I can tell you about the real benefits of interacting with music in all life stages, especially learning how to play a piano. The Art of Science Learning, directed by Harvey Seifter, is a National Science Foundation-funded initiative that uses the arts to spark creativity in science education and the development of an innovative 21st Century STEM workforce. She has wide-reaching interests in American preK-12 education, but is particularly passionate about cultivating quality, reflective, common sense, synergistic school systems that promote powerful teaching and learning.
Her practice centers on connecting educators, youth and families with place through interdisciplinary education using memory, story, play and art making through community art /ecology projects, livelihoods training, teacher professional development and educational research and practice.
I was Aslan in the play Narnia and it was a great experience; it was also my first time at Arts & Learning…Dancing and singing is may favorite thing in a play. Bragdon got the support of Anne Arundel County Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell, long a proponent of schools of choice, who knew well the impact arts integration had had in other Maryland schools. Over the years of development a team of designers synthesized arts-based and inquiry-based learning approaches that were then applied in urban, rural and small city settings. I was always good at school with honors subjects, but nothing really captured my love and attention like the arts. What Bates and many other arts-integrated schools across the country are showing is that by creating a richer, more memorable learning experience through the arts, they unleash not only a rising tide of academic achievement but they lay the foundation for what it means to be a truly creative community.
